Is your car tax disc lost, stolen or damaged?

If so, you must replace your tax disc. Similarly, if the information on the disc has faded and can’t be read or your tax disc has been destroyed then you’ll need to apply for a replacement.

Our guide looks at how you obtain a replacement tax disc.

Getting a replacement tax disc

You can apply for a replacement tax disc by post or at your local DVLA office. In order to do this you will have to send or take:

A completed V20 form (called ‘application for duplicate tax disc’)

The fee (£7)

The original tax disc (if you still have it)

Your registration certificate or new keeper supplement (if you don’t have this you will also have to complete a V62 (called ‘application for a vehicle registration certificate’). This will cost you an additional £25

If DVLA records show that you are the registered keeper and that the vehicle is currently taxed, a duplicate tax disc will be issued straight away.

If not, DVLA will hold your application until the vehicle record has been updated. They may issue a temporary tax disc to you (valid for up to eight weeks) and you’ll receive a duplicate tax disc once their records have been updated.

How much does a replacement tax disc cost?

A duplicate tax disc currently costs £7.

However, you don’t have to pay the fee if:

The tax disc has been lost in the post

The police are holding the tax disc as evidence

The tax disc is unreadable or the colour has faded

Your car has been stolen and has been recovered without the tax disc

Your car is exempt from paying vehicle tax

What if I find the original tax disc?

If you find the original tax disc, you should return it to the DVLA office that issued the replacement tax disc. This is because the original tax disc is no longer valid and you should keep the replacement tax disc on your vehicle.
